Truthwitch Tuesday Recap - Week of Oct. 25

So a lot happened this week in the frenzy of anticipation of Truthwitch by Susan Dennard. As with most Truthwitch Tuesdays, Sooz and Nicola (@Truthwitch) almost always seem to drop a huge bomb that makes everyone even more excited for the release of Truthwitch. This week was no different.

Sooz and Nicola unveiled a huge new resource for all Witchlanders, a website for Truthwitch which you can find it at www.thewitchlands.com! On this website there are so many things for people to do. Want to find out what your hometown in the world of Truthwitch is? There's a quiz for that! Want to know how to swear as vibrantly or colourfully as Safiya, one of the main characters in Truthwitch? There's a page dedicated to that! You want to explore the places in the Witchlands? There's a HUGE interactive map for that with so many interesting details for that!

Also, this #TruthwitchTuesday also included another fun challenge. If 100 people retweeted Sooz's tweet, we would be able to unlock a certain dance scene from Truthwitch! Everyone rocked because the challenge was completed in less than half an hour! (And here I was late to it because of stupid band...) So you can now view this exclusive scene on thewitchlands.com!

Is that enough awesomeness for you? Oh but wait, there's MORE. Sooz and her team have spoiled us even more. With what you may ask? A freaking preorder giveaway is here. If you have preordered Truthwitch, head on over to the website and submit your receipt for a signed bookplate from Sooz and a coolio double-sides poster which I believe has not yet been revealed. But nevertheless is bound to be AWESOME.

Overall this Truthwitch Tuesday was absolutely AMAZING for all fans of Sooz's upcoming release of Truthwitch, and I bet she and her team still have a hell of a lot up their sleeves.

Reminder: There is still a competition going on with @Truthwitch! Are you super good at colouring? Well now's your chance! Nicola has a super awesome line art of the sea fox from the book! Colour it and tag @Truthwitch as well as #MySeaFox for a chance to enter and win an ARC of Truthwitch! Head over to her profile for more info!

Thank you for reading! I hope this week's recap of Truthwitch Tuesday was helpful to some of you! If you have any questions or comments, be sure to comment below!

Have a spooktacular Halloween! :)

Book Talk: Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard (Chapters 1-14)

As some of you may know, I'm a part of Susan Dennard's promotional Street Team for Truthwitch. I'm a proud Firewitch, so you all better watch out. ;)

Anyways as a part of being on the Street Team, we have decided to participate in the Something Strange and Deadly Read-Along hosted by the WaterwitchBabes! So here's the discussion for chapters 1-14.

1. How do you think you would react to the Dead walking around in your city?

Hmmm... I'm not sure actually I would notice because I never really go outside unless I'm going to school lol. But if I did see them walking around, I think I would remember "AIM FOR THE FREAKING KNEES!!" and I would be fine. Thanks Sooz for ingraining this in to us! XD

2. What do you think about the Dead? Are you glad it isn't too Zombie-ish, or were you hoping for a more Zombie-esque theme?

I liked how they were described! Normally I'm pretty creeped out by zombie things, but Sooz made it toned down enough that I could get into the zombie theme! Also, I love her adjectives that she used to describe the Dead.

3. How do you feel about Eleanor as a character?

I absolutely adored Eleanor! She was definitely the sass master in this trilogy! I love how she wants to be independent and doesn't let others control her! Eleanor's got guts and can make decisions for herself. And that are some of the best qualities a character, actually ANYONE, should have.

And there you have it! Don't you want to participate in this awesome read-along? You can sign up here

Thanks for reading and I hope you have and awesome day!

Book on! :)

Book Review: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Okay, okay, I know this is an oldie but it's definitely one of my favourites, written and sentimentally. It's the one responsible for me joining Twitter and meeting all these super awesome people and inspired me to start my own blog. Thanks guys so much, I don't even know how to thank you. This one is for you.

Throne of Glass
By: Sarah J. Maas
Pages: 404
Published: August 7th, 2012
Published by: Bloomsbury USA Children's
Series: Throne of Glass #1
Format: e-book
Own: Yes (Paperback)
Rating: 9/10

Read more about it on Goodreads.

Synopsis:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Thoughts:

I picked up this book in July of 2015 and it instantly became a new favourite series. I was looking in different Goodreads lists and looking for something with a badass heroine with a interesting plot. I believe it was at 10pm when I found it on Goodreads. Let me just the original cover was a huge turn-off. Personally, I normally dislike books with photographed people on its cover. But I read some reviews, and I was like “okay, I’ll try and see if I can pick this up.” And let me just say it did not disappoint.

In my opinion, I would rate Throne of Glass with a 9/10 stars due to its super intriguing plot, detailed fantasy world building, and tangible characters.

As seen in the summary of the book, the description of Throne of Glass seems like a rip-off of other popular novels such as The Hunger Games, The Selection, or some other competition-based book. However, once diving into the book, I loved how the plot takes a u-turn into several twists and turns ending up in very unexpected places, and without spoiling it, deriving from other novels with similar plot premises to The Hunger Games. It truly becomes its own book with the help of Sarah J. Maas’ writing style. The entire plot easily takes things in different directions and leaves the reader to wonder what type of story will continue Celaena's story in the series’ future novels.

While the book is fast-paced and engaging, there were times when the author could have slowed down and focused more on the action of the competition the protagonist was preparing and striving for all throughout the book. After all, the reason I wanted to read the book was for the competition. I wanted to read gore and blood and other cool assassin things. Sadly, that didn’t really happen until the end. But nonetheless, the author's style perfectly matches the story she has to tell and is almost flawless, causing me to read this compelling novel in the span of a day! If you are in a reading slump, this can be a great way to rejuvenate that motivation to read. It certainly worked for me.

Sarah was able to build the world of Erilea and its situation, despite the protagonist being trapped in the royal palace. We were able to learn all about how Adarlan has taken over most of the major cities in the land and have enslaved many people from still opposing countries.

The author was also able to create amazing characters that are easily relatable with quirky personality traits that I could not help but to hope for them to be happier. Celaena was basically the one who was a cinnamon roll, but could kill you. She had this amazing backstory, and motives; she’s definitely one of my favourite female characters. Prince Dorian was absolutely the cinnamon roll, who is literally a cinnamon roll. He was so swoon-worthy throughout the whole book. The Captain of the Guard, Chaol, is that one that looks like he could kill you, but really is the cinnamon roll. His loyalness to Dorian, gahhh, all I can say is awwwww. And Nehemia, don’t get me started on her. Her friendship with Celaena was literally the best. All the relationships in the book were super on-point.

Final Verdict:

As a whole, the book, Throne of Glass, was absolutely amazing! The book will have you itching to read the rest of the Throne of Glass series. I would definitely recommend this book if you enjoy reading about strong heroines, magic, and competitions all woven together!

And if you are one of those people who hasn’t read it, go read it. Like now. I’m not sure how you’ve survived up until this point without it.

Introductions Are Polite, so...

Welcome to Hogwarts! Well this isn't really Hogwarts... But home just the same. Anyways welcome to my blog!
Hey this is Emily or Em (whichever you prefer), and a few of you may know me from other places *cough Twitter cough*, but I will assume most of you are new.

So once again, welcome to my blog! This will mostly be a place where I express how I feel on certain books or other forms of media, as well as a place to dump my art or pretty much anything else I find interesting. But, books are mainly my thing. :)

I am currently a Canadian high school student and participating in many, many activities with a strong value on family. So if I am ever inactive for some reason, any of those would probably be taking up my time, instead of all of you lovelies on the Internet! But anyways, I plan to try and keep this blog as active as possible.

So in this introduction post, I will be doing a sort of "fave ___" meme, so you get to know me a little better! Alors, allons-y!

1. Favourite movie

Definitely, definitely Star Wars. Nothing will ever beat this saga that was a huge part of my childhood. Just the way the story wove together, the heroes and the villains were so detailed and intricate with their own motives... I could probably gush about Star Wars longer, but, hehe, I will just move on now.

2. Favourite TV shows/anime

Favourite TV show has to be either Avatar: The Last Airbender, Batman Beyond or the Mission Impossible TV series from the 1960's. Love all the character development all throughout ATLA with the amazing plot line and hilarious encounters. Batman Beyond had such a great concept in my opinion, and Terry was probably my favourite as Batman. Lastly, Mission Impossible was so on point! Somehow they make this huge detailed plan work! Also, the theme song I could play for hours on my alto saxophone.

I am a huge sports anime nerd, but I have managed to watch a couple of other things lol. My favourites are probably Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (note: BROTHERHOOD), Kuroko no Basket and Ouran High School Host club. (I hope that was a good mix of genres!) These stories will always hold a special place in my heart, as will the characters.

3. Favourite books

Top three series because I cannot choose a single book. XD First, definitely Harry Potter because who does not have this as one of their too series!? Secondly, Percy Jackson and the Olympians as well as the Heroes of Olympus because I consider them one long story lol. And lastly a new favourite, the Throne of Glass series! I could probably go on and on about this series, but I am trying to keep this short.

4. Favourite female characters

Annabeth Chase, Hermione Granger, Celaena/Aelin, Katara, Tris Prior, and June Iparis to name a few.

5. Favourite male characters

Percy Jackson, Draco Malfoy, Zuko, Dorian Havilliard, Rowan Whitehorn, Daniel Sheridan, Jaron, Four, and so many more!

6. Favourite authors

Susan Dennard, Sarah J. Maas, J.K. Rowling, Rick Riordan, John Green... There's too many. NEVER ASK A BOOKNERDIGAN TO NAME THEIR FAVOURITE AUTHOR. It's like asking someone to choose their favourite type of dessert. They are all so kind and write amazing stuff!

7. Favourite singers/bands

Please do not question my music choices. Imagine Dragons, Mother Mother, Halsey, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and... High School Musical.

8. Current celebrity crushes

Cara Delevingne, Vanessa Hudgens, Emma Watson, and Godfrey Gao (and he's a Canadian!).

Okay! That was a super long first introduction post! I hope you got to know me a little better. I hope to get to know all of you lovely people as I continue with this blog! "Let's rattle the stars!"

Peace out,
Em (PiplupsShadow)
